Gimball Brass Lamp with 1" Wick
An excellent quality cabin lamp made in Holland by DHR from polished and lacquered brass. The fount is weighted to maintain a vertical alignment. This lamp comes with the wall mounted gimbal arm seen in the picture. It will hold 350 ml of lamp oil and will burn for approximately 24 hours. Overall height 240 mm. Projection from bulkhead 160 mm. Supplied complete with smoke shade and arm. Sadly the new smoke shade looks rather naff to go with such a fine lamp. You might prefer to purchase the Gypsy Moth version.
A paraffin lamp is a very practical piece of equipment. It provides a warm light and a little heat in the winter. The light can be dimmed to a glimmer for night watches, just enough to light the way to the heads. In harbour the lamp can be taken from its gimbals and used on the dining table for atmospheric eating. I have run paraffin lights whilst sailing in 55 knots of wind with no hint of trouble. This is a better quality paraffin oil lamp than the usual ones. In particular the stem holding the gimbals is a robust single piece brass casting whereas many versions have a stem bolted to a thin pressed brass plate which will buckle and break when your crew lands on it. Paraffin is also first class wood preservative so any spills wont be wasted.
Save your batteries. This lamp is a little more expensive than some other ones. The choice is yours.
