Royal Institute of Navigation at Arthur Beale
Arthur Beale recently had a visit from the Royal Institute of Navigation. They found their way to our shop which was a good start!
I didn't know much about their organisation until I met Roger McKinlay at an event at the Little Ship Club. We got chatting and he told me about the organisation. It is a learned society but is not just a group of boffins, their membership covers professional experts plus keen amateurs and people who are just plain interested in navigation. Not just nautical navigation either, they have a lot of air navigators, natural navigators and even biological navigators. The Society produces an excellent bi-monthly magazine called Navigation News. I have a few copies in my office so if anyone is interested please pop in to Arthur Beale and I’ll give you one.
I invited Roger and Peter Chapman-Andrews, the President, to look around Arthur Beale, hence the visit. They enjoyed looking at the old shop and browsing through some of the historical documents. I took the opportunity of presenting Peter with the very first Arthur Beale Traverse Board Kit.
They haven’t been used for hundreds of years so it is time for a resurgence! Watch out Garmin and Raymarine – here we come!
