The Sea and the Snow - How we reached and climbed a volcano at the ends of the earth. - Philip Temple

The Sea and the Snow - How we reached and climbed a volcano at the ends of the earth. - Philip Temple

The Sea and The Snow-an extraordinary illustrated first-hand account of an Australian sub-Antarctic sailing/climbing expedition skippered fifty years ago by H W 'Bill' Tilman-is just published.

Fifty years ago ten young, or youthful, men set out to climb one of the world's most inaccessible peaks-an unclimbed 9,000-foot volcanic island, thousands of miles to the south-west of Australia. To make sure they got there against the prevailing winds-and back-they had as their Skipper none other than the renowned high-latitude sailor H. W. 'Bill' Tilman. One of their number, Philip Temple, wrote a book about the expedition, The Sea and The Snow, and our favourite publisher, Lodestar Books, has produced a fine new 50th-Anniversary edition, lavishly illustrated with many previously unpublished photographs by expedition leader Warwick Deacock.

On the 6th October Arthur Beale are delighted to be hosting an evening of talks, with slideshows and film to celebrate the launch of The Sea and The Snow by Philip Temple.

To celebrate the book's launch Arthur Beale invite you to an evening in company on the 6th October with the author Philip Temple himself, and our friend Bob Comlay, who later sailed to Greenland with Tilman and the expedition's engineer Colin Putt. Their reminiscences, combined with a slide show and some never-released film of the expedition, will make for a memorable event; we suggest you book early to be sure of a seat. As usual, there will be a nominal £5 admission charge, to be refunded against any purchase to the value of £15 or more on the night. A copy of The Sea and The Snow would fit the bill perfectly!
