Arthur Beale Canvas Smocks!

Arthur Beale Canvas Smocks!
As Autumn approaches you will need some protection against the chill wind. Our tough canvas smocks are just the thing. The natural canvas will block out the wind and resist a quick shower without making you sweaty. The two front pockets are fantastically useful and there is a secret inside pocket too - ideal for keeping your reading glasses or phone handy. We have added a strong attachment point so you can keep your knive on a lanyard. If you own the splendid Leatherman Skeletool then it will...

National Historic Ships UK Photo Competition 2019 - Faces of the Sea
Arthur Beale are sponsoring a £300.00 prize for the best photo in the "Faces of the Sea" category. There are other categories too with different prizes but of course nothing could beat an Arthur Beale voucher -although four tickets on the Waverley sounds fun too. But don't hang around, the photos need to be in by the end of August. There will be a posh awards ceremony in Greenwich on 26th November. So get onto the website - nationalhistorisships.org.uk and upload your favourite nautical photos...

Summer Holidays?

Summer Holidays?
While the shop was basking in 38°C we were as cool as cucumbers in the icy coast off East Greenland. Here is Integrity, the wonderful yacht built by Will Stirling, snugling up to the bergs. There were a few polar bears nearby but they caused us no problems. Arthur Beale's clothing proved just the thing for this adventure. My Devold Expedition merinos and our Beerenberg oiled wool pullovers kept me warm no matter what. The Gill Crosswind Salopettes were raved about too. I was also testing a few...

Summer has arrived?

Summer has arrived?
We’ve installed our summer window and stocked up on shorts, Breton tops and Tilley hats although I confess last week I was still wearing Expedition Merinos and my Arthur Beale Beerenberg pullover whilst sailing up to Northumbria. Summer might have arrived but those night watches can get mighty chilly! We have lots of great kit to help you enjoy your boating no matter what kind of boat you have. How about some top-quality compact gear that you can use onboard or ashore? How about this...

Take a look at the brand new PlanKform!

Take a look at the brand new PlanKform!
Plan K form I think you will love our brand-new trestle design. So handy in the boatyard but they have endless other uses too, and, unlike most trestles, they are very compact to store and easy to transport. Not just a trestle but a complete work station. Use them for: Rigging Benches – bolt on wire cutters and crimping tools. Drill holes for your fids, add hooks to hang on your palms and knives. Mast storage - the wide surface is gentle on softwood spars and provides somewhere handy to rest...

Tony Curphey - the oldest person the sail solo non-stop around the world!

Tony Curphey - the oldest person the sail solo non-stop around the world!
Tony has arrived back in Hampshire after 30,000 miles of sailing in his 32 ft yacht Nicola Deux (a Nic 32). Apparently he is looking forward to a King Prawn Curry from his local take-away. I confess that after a long sea voyage the desire for a curry was high on my list, coupled with a beer and a shower. Deciding which pleasure to have first is one of the hardest decisions to make. A beer in the shower might be possible but the curry simply wouldn't work. Tony has accomplished a truly amazing...

Change to opening hours!

Change to opening hours!
We are making a minor change to our opening hours. From 2nd May we will be closing at 19:00 on Thursdays. We used to stay open until 20:00 but it proved rather quiet so we decided to make the change at least until the Christmas season when we will probably open longer every day. So we are now open until 19:00 every day except Sunday when we close at 17:00. We are having a day off on Bank Holiday Monday 6th May. The Arthur Beale Team.

Arthur Beale - Great for all your varnishing gear!

We prefer to stock top quality equipment rather than cheap brushes with hairs that fall out or masking tape which leaves a tenacious residue on your fresh paint. So if you need antifouling, varnish, abrasives, yacht enamels, Coelan, brushes or masking tape we are the place to visit! Everything we stock...

Classic Boat Awards

Classic Boat Awards
Last night I was invited to attend the Classic Boat Awards Ceremony by Michael Wright, the proud owner of Carlotta a Bristol Channel Pilot Cutter built in 1899. Carlotta had been nominated in two award categories, as the “Best Restored Sailing Vessel Over 40ft” and also “Centenariun of the Year”. Arthur Beale were proud to have supplied various bits of chandlery, charts and a tender and outboard for Carlotta. We were almost as pleased as Michael was when the boat not only picked up the Best...
