Sara and Will Stirling Win Classic Boater(s) of the Year Award

Sara and Will Stirling Win Classic Boater(s) of the Year Award
Congratulations to Will and Sara for picking up the coveted Classic Boater of the Year Award. Its hard to know how they pack it all in. They run two boatyards – No 1 Covered Slip in Plymouth and Treluggan Boatyard in Cornwall – and are apparently looking at a third, but it’s nothing new to Sara, who set up and ran, for 12 years, the well-known Working Sail yard. Both are trained boatbuilders, both have MAs in maritime history, and, if that weren’t enough, Will just completed his seventh Arctic...

Ways to Stay Safe

Ways to Stay Safe
This should definately keep the virus out! Actually this is Lex in his diving gear last summer. He had seen our famous Beerenberg Roll Neck Pullover and thought it would be just the thing to keep warm during cold winter dives but sadly the roll neck wouldn't work with all the gear. Well Lex is now as happy as a sandbag as he has recently received our new Erebus Boat Neck Pullover. Its made from the wool from Black Welsh...

Established One Hundred and Sixty Five Years........
........well we were when Samuel Pepys wrote: "Great fears of the Sickenesses here in the City, it being said that two or three houses are already shut up. God preserve us all." "But now, how few people I see, and those walking like people that have taken leave of the world...." In those days Arthur Beale was called John Buckingham. Graces Guide to British Industry has Arthur Beale established around 1500 so we were a very well established ropemaker when the Great Plague struck London. The...

Update on our response Covid-19 - The Shop is Closed, but we're Open Online
We have decided to extend our weekend closure into next week and beyond, until we feel it is safe to reopen. We are constantly following the updated Government and World Health Organisation's advice, as well as taking into consideration the safety of our valued staff who travel in to work using public transport, leading us to come to this decision. Please do continue to support us and shop with us online and, despite the shop being closed, we will continue to answer all your phone calls and...

Arthur Beale Closed this Weekend – Unless You Need Something!

We’ve never seen Shaftesbury Avenue so quiet, and we’re sorry to say that because of this we won’t be opening the shop this Saturday or Sunday – UNLESS you need to come in and pick something up! If you do, just drop us a line by phone (0207 836 9034), email (sales@arthurbeale.co.uk) or pigeon* before Friday at 1900 and we can arrange for someone to let you in. Extra attention from the staff is...

What planets are they from?

What planets are they from?
Corona Virus is just one of those problems we have to cope with but Arthur Beale also has to contend with the thoughtless actions of the Local Council and our Letting Agents! Neal Street, just around the corner from Arthur Beale, is described as “one of the most eclectic streets for shopping in London” yet when I took a stroll down the street just before Christmas there were 16 empty shops. Most were dressed up with fancy graphics saying “Exciting Retail Opportunity” but let’s face the facts,...

Classic Boater of the Year Awards - Vote Now!
Sara and Will Stirling have been nominated for the Classic Boat Awards 2020. Are Will and Sara Stirling Britain’s busiest boatbuilding couple? They run two boatyards – No 1 Covered Slip in Plymouth and Treluggan Boatyard in Cornwall – and are looking at a third, but it’s nothing new to Sara, who set up and ran, for 12 years, the well-known Working Sail yard. Both are trained boatbuilders, both have MAs in maritime history, and, if that weren’t enough, Will just completed his seventh Arctic...

Interesting Thames Tides

Interesting Thames Tides
There wasn't much water in the river yesterday despite it being well past the time for low tide. It seems to be 2.3 m below predicted which sounds like a lot below to me. These strong SW winds must be holding it back. However, today it looks like it will surge up judging by the surge forecast. As it is a spring tide today with 7.4 m predicted, adding a 1 m of surge would definately slop over the top. Luckily the Thames Barrier will swing into action and close the river most of the day. I hope...
