Well I never!

Arthur Beale’s has received its first ever on-line order. Yes, despite not even having a website a few months ago, we now have on-line sales. Not only that, but it actually works! We have just sold a beautiful Norwegian Devold Thermo Jacket. It goes to show the quality of the customers we are attracting because these are truly great pure wool tops which will keep you toasty warm even in the Arctic Wastelands of...

How to Moor?

En route to Arthur Beale's by river bus I noticed a barge proudly displaying a large plaque saying "Freedom of the River Thames, Company of Watermen and Lightermen ". So I was interested to see how the professionals moor up. Lots of belt and braces seems to be the order of the day.

The extra bit of long link chain is a useful tip. I was very impressed by the securely held fender and I think Arthur Beale's must review...

Ocean of Life

“Ocean of Life” is possibly a strange choice of book for a chandlery to sell, let alone write a blog about, given that it is about neither boats nor sailing! It is, however, a book that should be read by everybody who uses the sea - a category that far exceeds the boating community to include pretty much everybody, given how reliant we are on the oceans for transport, energy and food.

Roberts is a biologist and...

What I Love about Cricket

On a lighter note. It’s always nice to see Arthur Beale appearing in print, and this is a mention that I don’t think anyone in the shop knew about, until Gerry unearthed it the other day. It’s from a book called “What I Love about Cricket: One Man’s Vain Attempt to Explain Cricket to a Teenager Who Couldn’t Give a Toss” by Sandy Balfour. It is, if you hadn’t guessed, a book about cricket. Beale’s sneaks in during a...

What's the point of six monthly inspections?

This M16 Stainless Steel (Grade 316) Eyebolt looks like it has been attacked by a lunatic with a grinder, or perhaps corroded by acid, or maybe subjected to a massive overload but it hasn't. It has simply been subjected to the wear and tear of a gym punch bag. I was amazed that a substantial fitting like this could have worn through but it is a regular occurrence in gymnasiums. Just imagine an eyebolt on the stem of a yacht...

Boeshield T9 Waterproof Corrosion Protection and Lubrication

Here is a wonderful product. Once you appreciate its talents you will find that you will be using it time after time. I've just had my trusty Balmar alternator serviced and I was keen to protect the newly connected terminations. Boeshield T9 is perfect for protecting electrical circuits on boats but it can do a lot more too. It was originally developed by...

..and what on earth is this for?

We spent yesterday clearing out the vaults. It is like an archaeological dig with decaying timber and old rubble. However occasionally we find some interesting stuff and we are careful to hang on to these intriguing pieces. Here is one piece which I have no idea what purpose it serves. There are a series of small holes in the lower arm. Any ideas welcome. It is on display on our bookshelves if you would like a closer look.

Here is the left hand vault. Although it was in a bit of...

Diesel Bug Talk

On a cold winter evening it is all too tempting to stay indoors and watch TV but occasionally an event comes up which is so exciting that it simply can't be missed. Yes, I am talking about Arthur Beale's Diesel Bug Talk.

OK, it might not sound too exciting but if your engines grind to a halt in the Alderney Race due to blocked filters then you will wish you had got off your sofa and attended this very professional...
