London Fashion Week - An Antidote?

London is buzzing with all the top fashion designers showing off their beautiful clothes. We are very proud to be part of this great international city with its hugely successful fashion industry. But if fashion is to do with searching for the latest trends then Arthur Beale's clothing is probably the exact opposite. We simply can't keep up with changing colours and different styles so we just stick to timeless classics. Take our Arthur Beale Beerenberg pullovers. They are made from undyed and...

A Cunning Plan

I have asked all my friends who have boats on the East Coast if they would like to have an end of season meet-up in Brightlingsea. I rashly promised fair winds to all. That would be fair enough, but the yachts are coming from all over the place. So here is my cunning plan. I hereby appeal to all the good folk of Brightlingsea to get out their finest Henry Hoovers and turn them on full blast during the morning of 23 rd September (in any case, you know your stair carpet could do with a clean)...

St Katharine Classic Boat Festival - This Weekend!

The St Katharine Docks Classic Boat Festival is part of the annual Totally Thames celebration. Arthur Beale have had a stand there for the last three years and we love it! This year our stand will be displaying our brand new Sailors' Smocks and the best Oiled Wool Pullover in town. What's more we will be offering special show deals so don't miss your chance. There will be about 40 vessels on display, some classic yachts and motor boats, and some vintage work boats. You can go onboard some of...

Arthur Beale's New Sailors' Smocks

Our new smocks have arrived and they are selling like hot cakes! We wanted a decent piece of workwear that we could sell at a moderate price. A smock that was tough and very practical but something that wouldn't make you go berserk if it got a splash of anti-fouling on it. So now we have a Sailors' Smock made from tough natural sailcloth which will improve with age. The canvas cuts out chilly wind so they are great over a tee shirt in the summer or a pullover in the winter. There are two large...

Steve Harvey

We are sorry to bring the sad news that Steve Harvey died recently having not recovered from a planned heart operation. All the staff at Arthur Beale will greatly miss Steve’s great talent and his cheery demeanour. Steve was an expert rope worker, highly respected in the industry and much loved by our clients. He loved his work, both chatting to clients about their projects and carrying out the intricate ropework in our characterful basement. Maybe less well known was Steve’s love of comic...

Would you like to work at Arthur Beales?

We are looking for an extra member of staff to join our friendly team. So if you know your baggywrinkle from your gooseneck why not apply? You would need to be at ease talking to and advising our boating clients. Ideally you would have a good working knowledge of ropes and rigging and maybe have some retail experience. It is a full time job with some rota weekend working. A job description can be downloaded here:...

If you are at a loose end this evening.....

....where better to be than at Arthur Beale's cool basement celebrating the launch of our brand new Rope Reference Catalogue! It will be a very ropey evening indeed. You can collect your new Rope Reference Catalogues whilst sipping a very special rum punch. I say "special" because I know the ingredients are rum, cane syrup and lime juice and I know the ratio is 3,2,1 but I'm not sure which order they are in. By the way, the rum will be Fair Transport Rum which was sailed across the Atlantic on...

Arthur Beale Rope Reference Catalogue Launch 20th July

To celebrate our new Rope Reference Catalogue we are going to have a mini celebration! We've a fine bottle of Fair Transport Rum which has arrived in the UK under sail alone - via the Atlantic by the tall ship Tres Hombres and the final North Sea leg in my little Vertue. We will be serving tots in our basement (plus a few beers) and handing out copies of the catalogue with staff on hand to discuss all things "Ropey". The catalogue has been printed and a copy can be downloaded here;...

Our New Rope Reference Catalogue is Finished!

Ok, its true we were hoping to have it ready for Beale Park but one thing and another got in the way and that didn't quite happen. In any case we haven't had one for 400 years so why rush it now! However we are on the cusp of going to print just a few things to tidy up and we will press the button. Its not a boring price list but an informative catalogue laid out in chronological order with the natural fibres at the begining and ending with Technora and the technical blends. There is a section...
