Black Welsh Mountain Sheep Don't Get Cold.......

.....and neither will you! Our Arthur Beale Beerenberg Oiled Wool Pullovers have just arrived in pure Welsh Mountain Sheep Wool. The sheep are called black but their wool is actually a rich dark brown colour. There is no dye or bleach involved, just a gentle wash to retain the natural lanolin so they smell gorgeous. These British Made pullovers are built to last with reinforced shoulder seems and thumbholes. They rarely need to be cleaned but when they are washed they will not shed any of the...

Good Little Ship - A Talk by Peter Willis You've missed it!

Arthur Ransome’s "We Didn’t Mean to Go to Sea" was inspired by his boat the "Nancy Blackett" which appears in the book as the Goblin. But there was more to her influence on the novel than that, as Peter Willis shows in this new book, which combines an analysis of this classic of maritime literature (“a book of which Conrad would have been proud” – Hugh Brogan) with the history of the boat herself, her life, near-death, restoration and renaissance as an ambassador for Ransome and his tales. Also...

Avoid Plastic Pollution - Keep warm the natural way!

Why pollute the oceans with polyester micro fibres when there is a far better natural way to keep toastie warm? Layer One - Devold Expedition Merino Thermals. These are the type explorers wear. They are incredibly comfortable, super warm (even when wet), totally breathable and they never smell. Arthur Beale stock a range of these Norwegian thermals in mens and womens sizes. For general wear try the Devold Shirt, a simple long sleeved merino top which you will probably find you will never want...

Sailing Voyages - Success and Failure - A Talk at Arthur Beale - 25th October

On Wednesday 25 th October Arthur Beale and Fernhurst Books will be hosting an evening looking at two contrasting voyages which are recounted in books from the Making Waves series. Kim C Sturgess will recount how, at the age of 50, he undertook his first major sailing adventure, sailing around Britain – the dream of many cruisers in the UK. He made it achievable in 50 day sails and 1 night passage. This has proved a popular tale and his book ( Sailing Around Britain ) moves into its second...

London Fashion Week - An Antidote?

London is buzzing with all the top fashion designers showing off their beautiful clothes. We are very proud to be part of this great international city with its hugely successful fashion industry. We simply can't keep up with changing colours and different styles so we just stick to timeless classics. Take our Arthur Beale Beerenberg pullovers. They are made from undyed and...

A Cunning Plan

I have asked all my friends who have boats on the East Coast if they would like to have an end of season meet-up in Brightlingsea. I rashly promised fair winds to all. That would be fair enough, but the yachts are coming from all over the place. So here is my cunning plan. I hereby appeal to all the good folk of Brightlingsea to get out their finest Henry Hoovers and turn them on full blast during the morning of 23 rd September (in any case, you know your stair carpet could do with a clean)...

Arthur Beale's New Sailors' Smocks

Our new smocks have arrived and they are selling like hot cakes! We wanted a decent piece of workwear that we could sell at a moderate price. A smock that was tough and very practical but something that wouldn't make you go berserk if it got a splash of anti-fouling on it. So now we have a Sailors' Smock made from tough natural sailcloth which will improve with age. The canvas cuts out chilly wind so they are great over a tee shirt in the summer or a pullover in the winter. There are two large...
